Outdated Cloud Backup Strategies Put Businesses at Risk of Data Loss, Ransomware Attacks, and Compliance Violations
Half of organizations still struggle to access backup data when needed, with human error and ransomware driving major risks. Experts suggests adopting automated, multi-layered backup solutions to ensure data protection, compliance, and business continuity.

A report indicated that a lot of businesses are having a big difficulty at the moment that over half of them can't find their backup data when they need it. The release of Eon's 2025 State of Cloud Backup report shows that backup strategies haven't kept up with the rapid growth of multi-cloud environment.
The report highlights that many IT teams realize their backup strategies are outdated only when asked a simple question that whether they know exactly what is being backed up and if it’s done correctly.
The survey found that 18% of firms lost data in the cloud last year, while another 22% weren't even sure if they had lost data or not. It's alarming that 64% of data loss instances were caused by people making mistakes, and ransomware was responsible for over a quarter of them.
Even though these threats exist, a lot of businesses still rely on manual processes or only single layer of security measures. Only 49% have automated backup systems, and only 29% have advanced ransomware protection. Even more concerning, 13% claimed they didn't have any ransomware protection for their cloud backups.
In multi-cloud environments, the problem grows worse. 78% of companies utilize more than one cloud provider, yet many are still using each provider's own disaster recovery services or, in some circumstances, not backing up their data at all. This broken-up method makes it hard to see, protect, and recover, which means that organizations aren't ready for crucial scenarios.
This flaw costs a lot. Old ways of backing up data not only put it at risk, but they can also cause problems with compliance. In fact, compliance was the most common reason businesses use backup solutions.More than half (54%) of IT leaders indicated their biggest issue was not being able to keep up with compliance and security because they weren't managing backups well.
Report suggests that businesses should use a more modern strategies. This includes using tools with AI-driven risk scoring, find unprotected data in real time, and backup systems that operate well in both hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
Always get a reliable data backup solution that has automated protection, multiple layers of security, and quick recovery. Strong backup plans not only protect against data loss and ransomware, but they also make sure enterprises stay in business and follow the rules. Don't wait for a problem to happen, make backup as your initial line of defence.
