OpenAI's New Codex Micro AI Keypad Brings Faster AI Coding Workflows for Developers

OpenAI has entered the hardware market with the release of Codex Micro, its first hardware device targeted for developers who use the Codex AI coding platform. The new AI keypad was developed in collaboration with accessories company Work Louder and is intended to enable working with AI coding agents faster and easier.

The Codex Micro is a compact keypad that OpenAI refers to as a "command center" for AI-powered tasks. Users can control AI tasks directly from the keypad rather than relying solely on a computer or smartphone. It includes 13 mechanical keys, a touch sensor, a rotary dial, a planar joystick, and RGB lighting, allowing users to quickly access many Codex functionalities.

One of its main features is a set of illuminated Agent Keys that display the status of AI tasks in various colors. Users may immediately determine if a task is currently operating, completed, waiting for input, or has met an error. The keypad also has Command Keys for typical activities, and the rotary dial allows users to specify how much computer power an AI activity should utilize.

OpenAI claims that users may completely customize the keypad by remapping each key. The device also includes 32 replaceable icon keycaps and six customizable layers for Work Louder's customization software. The Codex Micro has Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity, making it compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. It comes in two versions, Clicky and Silent to accommodate different user preferences. Priced at $230 (around Rs 22,000), the Codex Micro is available for pre-order and will be sold as a limited-edition product.

The release comes as OpenAI continues to expand its hardware ambitions. According to reports, the corporation is also working on a new AI device with former Apple designer Jony Ive, though the project is still in development. With the release of the Codex Micro, OpenAI has taken its first major move into AI hardware, while also expanding its ecosystem beyond software and ChatGPT.
