Instagram First Draft Makes Reels Editing Faster by Automatically Trimming and Joining Video Clips
Instagram First Draft automatically turns raw video clips into edited Reels by trimming pauses and selecting useful moments, making video editing faster.
Instagram’s new First Draft feature can automatically select, trim and combine raw video clips into a ready-to-edit Reel, giving creators a faster way to turn long footage into short videos.
Instagram is making Reels editing easier with a new feature called First Draft. The tool is designed for creators who have lots of raw video footage but do not want to spend a long time searching through clips and manually putting the best moments together.
With First Draft, users can select the clips they want to use and let Instagram create an initial Reel automatically. The tool analyses the selected footage, removes unnecessary sections, cuts long pauses and combines useful moments into a short video. Instagram says the first draft can be created within seconds.
First Draft does not permanently apply its changes. Instagram says all edits are reversible, allowing creators to move clips around, remove sections and adjust the timing before publishing. This makes First Draft more of a quick starting point than a complete video editor. Once the initial cut is created, users can continue using Instagram’s existing editing tools to add music, effects and other finishing touches.
First Draft is not the first automated video editing feature available to creators. Apps such as CapCut and Adobe Firefly already offer similar tools. However, bringing automated editing directly into Instagram could save creators from exporting their footage to another app before creating a Reel.
Instagram has also been adding other tools to simplify content creation. The company recently introduced options for changing audio on existing posts and is working on additional features for its Edits video editing app.
Reels are particularly important to Instagram, accounting for about half of the time users spend on the platform, according to the company. Making video creation faster could encourage more users to create and publish short-form videos. For now, Instagram First Draft is available on iOS, while the company has not confirmed when it will arrive on Android. Instagram has also not clearly stated whether First Draft uses generative AI. For creators, the main benefit is straightforward that less time sorting and trimming raw footage and more time refining the final Reel.
