Google Play Age Signals API Expands Worldwide to Support Secure Age Verification for Apps

Google has announced the global rollout of its Play Age Signals API, a new tool that allows developers to verify a user's age without requiring an ID card or selfie. It is intended to increase online child safety while maintaining user privacy as more countries impose stricter age verification rules for apps.

Instead of collecting personal identity documents, the system utilizes Google Family Link. Parents who control their children's Google accounts can specify an age range, such as 13-15 or 16-17, for supported apps. Using this information, developers can display age-appropriate material and services. According to Google, these age ranges are automatically updated as children age. This functionality is optional. Parents can choose whether to enable it and can turn it off at any moment. If they do not share the same age range, the system will not transmit age data to apps.

Google began testing the Play Age Signals API in Brazil last year. It is now being rolled out globally, with Australia and Canada among the first to receive it. According to Google, developers from every country, including the United States, will have access to the API by the end of 2026.

The new feature comes as multiple governments, including some US states, urge app stores to strengthen age verification for online services. These restrictions are designed to protect children from inappropriate content. Google anticipates that by introducing this API, developers will be able to meet these legal requirements while not gathering sensitive personal information. But the feature is dependent on parents approving Family Link, some children may still create individual accounts under various ages. Additionally, app developers must choose to use the API for it to function.
