Microsoft Rolls Out Windows 11 26H2 Update With File Explorer and Search Improvements
Windows 11 users can now start checking for the 2026 Update, but don’t expect a major visual overhaul. Version 26H2 mainly brings previously released features together while extending support for supported PCs.
Microsoft has started gradually rolling out Windows 11 version 26H2, also known as the Windows 11 2026 Update. The update is being delivered through Windows Update and is designed to be a relatively minor upgrade for PCs already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2.
Users can check whether the update is available by going to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates. However, Microsoft may temporarily block the update on some devices if it identifies a known compatibility issue. These restrictions, known as safeguard holds, are intended to prevent problems during or after installation.
Windows 11 26H2 is based on the same underlying code as versions 24H2 and 25H2. As a result, users who have already installed recent Windows updates may not notice major changes immediately after upgrading.
Instead, the update primarily enables features that Microsoft has been delivering through previous updates. These include improvements to File Explorer and Windows Search, with search becoming better at handling spelling mistakes and partial app names. Microsoft may also introduce some interface changes, although the availability of individual features can vary depending on the device, region and stage of the rollout.
For users already running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, installing the update should be relatively straightforward. One of the key benefits is the updated Windows 11 support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions will receive two years of support, while Enterprise and Education editions will receive three years.
Before installing the Windows 11 2026 Update, users should back up important files and ensure their device drivers are up to date. If Windows Update shows a safeguard hold, Microsoft recommends waiting rather than attempting to force the installation.
Microsoft lists Windows 11 26H2 as build 26300. Users running much older Windows 11 versions may need to go through a larger upgrade process instead of receiving the smaller enablement package available to recent versions.
Overall, Windows 11 26H2 is more of a refinement than a major redesign. For supported PCs, the update offers a relatively simple way to move to the latest Windows 11 release while gaining access to features Microsoft has introduced over recent updates.
