OpenAI Introduces Localised Pricing for ChatGPT in India to Simplify Payments and Expand AI Accessibility Nationwide
OpenAI has introduced localised pricing for ChatGPT in India, offering subscriptions in rupees to simplify payments. With GPT-5 support for Indian languages and growing competition, this move aims to expand accessibility in one of its largest markets.

OpenAI announced that it is piloting localised pricing for its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in India. This change is meant to make payments easier and cheaper for Indian users, who are one of the company's biggest user bases around the world. India is now one of the few countries, along with the UK and European countries, where OpenAI lets customers pay in their own currency.
OpenAI has set new rates in rupees for its subscription plans as part of the pilot program. You can now get the ChatGPT Plus plan for ₹1,999 per month (including GST). The Pro plan is ₹19,900 per month. The Team plan costs ₹2,099 per seat per month for businesses. Before, Indian users had to pay in US dollars, which is $20 for Plus, $200 for Pro, and $30 per seat for Team subscriptions.
This new price comes out just after OpenAI unveiled GPT-5. It also supports 12 Indian languages. Some reports state that OpenAI is also working on a cheaper version called ChatGPT Go, which might cost just ₹399 a month. This would make it easier for more people to use.
Indian developers and startup founders have been quite vocal about wanting local pricing. During his India visit in February 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was urged to make ChatGPT more affordable for the country’s fast-growing developer ecosystem. Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI's Vice President of Engineering, stated in June that the company is working hard to make its services affordable and easy to use for developers in India as part of its worldwide objective.
With almost 700 million active users weekly, India rapidly became OpenAI's second-largest market outside of the US. Altman has even claimed that India could soon become ChatGPT's biggest market, surpassing the U.S.
However, competition in India’s AI space is growing. Google is providing college students in India a free year of access to its premium AI tools. Perplexity is giving Bharti Airtel's 360 million subscribers a free year of access to Perplexity Pro.
OpenAI is definitely working to get more business in India by utilising localised pricing and making AI more popular. This means that people can now get strong AI solutions for affordable access that can help with both personal and professional demands.
