UPI Payments May Soon Work Without PIN, Making Digital Transactions Smoother and More Convenient
NPCI may soon allow UPI payments through face ID and biometrics, making PINs optional and transactions faster, safer, and more user-friendly.

A significant shift in how we use UPI for payments may be on the way. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is apparently aiming to allow UPI transactions to be approved using facial recognition or biometric data such as fingerprints or eye scans, eliminating the need to enter your UPI PIN every time.
Currently, each UPI transaction requires a 4-6 digit PIN for authentication. However, if this new system is implemented, users might simply use their facial ID or fingerprint to approve payments. This would make the process faster, more secure, and easier to use, particularly for those who have difficulties remembering their PIN or using smartphones, such as the elderly or persons living in rural areas.
Biometric verification provides a significant security advantage. Because fingerprints and iris scans are unique and difficult to steal or share, this step may help decrease UPI-related fraud, which frequently occurs when a person's PIN is compromised.
Experts feel that these changes will make digital transactions more secure and accessible. This move will be especially helpful for users with minimal digital literacy, allowing them to use digital payments more simply. According to the Reserve Bank of India's June 2025 report, UPI processed more than 18.39 billion transactions worth Rs 24.03 lakh crore. As UPI grows rapidly, this shift to biometric authentication has the potential to transform India's digital payments by making them safer, faster, and more user-friendly.
