Google’s Enhanced Protection Gets Smarter with Gemini Nano, Detecting Scams and Misleading Alerts Instantly

Google recently unveiled an improvement to Chrome's security, including the incorporation of Gemini Nano, an on-device AI model indicated to combat online scams. The technology giant announced this development in a blog post on Thursday, emphasizing how this AI-driven strategy will provide more improved protection for customers on both desktop and Android platforms.

Gemini Nano is part of Google's broader strategy for using artificial intelligence to combat cyber attacks more effectively. It now powers Chrome's Enhanced Protection mode within Safe Browsing, which presently provides twice the security of Standard Protection. With this version, Gemini Nano introduces improved, real-time defences, beginning with protection against remote tech support frauds, a typical scam method.

On Android, Google is also introducing new AI-powered features to detect and alert users about malicious or misleading push alerts, which can continue to defraud people even after they leave a fraudulent website. When Chrome identifies a potentially unsafe notice, it marks it as a "Possible scam," offering people the option of blocking or allowing future alerts from that website.

What distinguishes Gemini Nano is its capacity to run immediately on the device, allowing for immediate analysis of suspicious websites and behaviour. This allows it to respond swiftly to new and evolving fraud tactics, without relying on cloud processing.

Beyond Chrome, Google underlined how its AI systems are aggressively removing fraudulent content from Search. It presently filters out hundreds of millions of scam-related results per day, representing a 20x improvement.

Google's Gemini Nano aims to provide better, on-device security that adapts in real time, providing customers stronger protection and more control over the growing threat of online scams.
