Perplexity AI Expands to Smartphones with Motorola Deal, Eyes Samsung for Wider Mobile Market Reach

The San Francisco-based startup Perplexity AI has initiated significant efforts to increase its visibility on mobile devices. The business, known for its smart AI assistant that blends real-time online results with a question-and-answer format, is now collaborating with major smartphone brands to put its technology in the hands of more people.

Perplexity has recently signed an agreement with Motorola, which will be publicly revealed on April 24 during a product event in New York. As part of the agreement, Perplexity's AI assistant will be pre-installed on some Motorola models, including a version specifically suited for Motorola's Razr foldable phones.  Motorola might gain a competitive advantage by providing an alternative to Google's Gemini, which is the default AI on many Android phones.

While Motorola has a smaller global market share, the agreement is a significant milestone for Perplexity. The business is also in early talks with Samsung, one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers, about perhaps integrating its assistant deeper into Samsung's ecosystem.  Perplexity can be made the default assistant, preloaded on phones, or promoted on the Galaxy Store.

If successful, the Samsung contract would dramatically expand Perplexity's reach, since Samsung accounts for approximately 20% of global smartphone shipments. However, given Samsung's close relationship with Google, any arrangement would have to be carefully handled.  Nonetheless, Perplexity has already received assistance from Samsung's investment branch, NEXT.

Perplexity, founded only three years ago, is also collaborating with Deutsche Telekom in Europe to power AI features in a new "AI Phone," indicating the company's quick expansion in the AI area.
