Sam Altman’s India Visit: OpenAI CEO to Meet Govt Officials, Investors Amid AI Expansion Plans

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, will visit India on February 5 to meet with senior government officials, IT entrepreneurs, and venture capital investors. His visit comes at a time when India is expanding its artificial intelligence ambitions, particularly through the IndiaAI Mission.

According to sources, Altman will explain OpenAI's involvement in India's national AI policy. He is slated to meet with investors like Peak XV Partners and Accel, among others. This journey is part of his larger worldwide tour, which includes visits in Japan, South Korea, the UAE, Germany, and France.

India recently announced plans to create an indigenous fundamental AI model and invest in over 18,000 GPUs to foster AI innovation. Altman last visited India in June 2023, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and advocating for AI rules.

Meanwhile, OpenAI confronts increasing worldwide competition, particularly with Chinese LLM company DeepSeek, which has introduced a low-cost competitor concept. OpenAI is also grappling with copyright challenges in India, where publishers and media outlets accuse the business of improper use of their work.

Altman's visit follows SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son's recent proposal for India to become a semiconductor manufacturing hub. OpenAI and SoftBank have also launched a joint venture in Japan, with SoftBank apparently looking to spend $25 billion in OpenAI.
