Microsoft AI Chief Prioritizes 'Successful Sessions' as Key Metric to Elevate Copilot's User Experience and Personalization
Microsoft AI chief focuses on improving Copilot’s “Successful Session Rate” to enhance user experience and personalized AI interactions.

As Microsoft celebrated its 50th anniversary, Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, provided insights into the company's growing approach to artificial intelligence. Suleyman, who spoke at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters alongside previous CEOs Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and current CEO Satya Nadella, emphasised a shift in focus towards a unique success metric for Copilot, the company's AI assistant.
While traditional measures such as daily and weekly active users, distribution, and usage intensity are still significant, Suleyman highlighted his team's primary focus: SSR, or Successful Session Rate. This indicator measures the effectiveness of each user contact, providing a more detailed assessment of Copilot's value. Unlike previous generations, which depended on basic engagement metrics like time spent or overall user retention, today's AI systems benefit from real-time, personalised feedback and sentiment analysis.
Suleyman, who joined Microsoft after directing Inflection AI, highlighted that AI models are currently used to evaluate and judge the success of Copilot sessions. He noticed a significant improvement in SSR during the last four months, but declined to provide specific data.
Copilot's most recent enhancements include a more gentle voice, web page analysis while browsing, and new capabilities including personalised podcasts, complicated research tools, and customisable avatars or "looks" for the assistant. Suleyman pointed at playful designs, stating that he would prefer something "cutesy," such as a Furby.
Microsoft's renewed emphasis on user experience is a strategy shift—one based not only on usage figures, but also on how well AI meets real-world user needs.
