Google's 'Daily Listen': Personalized 5-Minute Audio Overviews Tailored to Your Interests

Google is testing a new AI-powered feature called "Daily Listen," which gives users a five-minute audio summary of news and topics that are relevant to them. This feature uses information from the user's Discover feed and news searches to make keeping informed more personal. Together with the music, it offers an AI-generated transcript and cover art.

In the US, Daily Listen is currently available for both Android and iOS. To turn it on, users can go to the Search Labs part of the Google app. When turned on, the "Made for you" Daily Listen card shows up in the Space slideshow below the search bar. A full-screen player lets users play, pause, rewind, mute the sound, and give input by clicking the thumbs up or down button.

This move fits with Google's larger plans to improve audio experiences driven by AI. One important thing is that the company released NotebookLM's Audio Overviews in September 2023. This is an AI-powered tool that turns documents into 10-minute podcasts hosted by virtual AI personalities. These "AI hosts" summarize material, make connections between different topics, and have lively, conversational chats.

NotebookLM's Audio Overviews recently got an update that added an interactive tool that lets users "call in" to the podcast. Users can ask AI hosts to go into more detail about certain points or give more explanations, which makes it feel like they are talking to an experienced tutor. Google calls this having a personal guide who listens and responds directly based on what you share.

These improvements are made possible by Google's cutting-edge Gemini 1.5 Pro and experimental Gemini 2.0 Flash. This is a big step toward using talking AI for everyday tasks like reading and learning. Google keeps changing the way people get to and connect with information with features like Daily Listen.
