Aadhaar Update 2025: UIDAI Introduces New Rules for Online Updates, e-KYC, and Digital Identity Security
Starting November 2025, UIDAI will launch new Aadhaar update rules with online document-free updates, free biometric updates for children, PAN-Aadhaar linking, and secure e-KYC verification, boosting digital identity, data protection, and Digital India initiatives for all citizens.
India is preparing for one of the most significant changes to the Aadhaar system since its inception. Effective from November 2025, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will implement a new set of Aadhaar rules aimed at making the process of updating and confirming Aadhaar faster, easier, and more secure. The measure is intended to improve the country's Digital India objective and will directly affect over 1.43 billion Aadhaar cardholders across the country.
Online Aadhaar Updates – No More Document Uploads
- Aadhaar cardholders can now update key details such as name, address, date of birth, and mobile number directly online.
- No need to upload supporting documents anymore — the UIDAI system will automatically verify details using linked databases like PAN, passport, driving licence, ration card, MGNREGA, and birth certificates.
- Biometric updates (fingerprints, iris scans, or photographs) will still require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
Free Biometric Updates for Children (Age 5–17 Years)
- From October 2025 to September 2026, children aged 5 to 17 years can update their biometrics free of charge.
- This initiative will benefit nearly 60 million children across India.
Improved e-KYC Verification for Secure Digital Access
- UIDAI and NPCI have launched new frameworks, Offline Aadhaar KYC and Aadhaar e-KYC Setu.
- These systems allow banks and NBFCs (Non-Banking Financial Company) to verify customer identity without viewing the full Aadhaar number, improving data privacy and cyber security.
- This change enables faster account verification and ensures compliance with India’s new data protection norms.
New Aadhaar Update Charges from October 2025
- UIDAI has revised its update fees effective October 1, 2025.
- ₹75 for demographic updates (earlier ₹50).
- ₹125 for biometric updates (earlier ₹100).
- The change reflects technology and infrastructure upgrades aimed at offering faster and more efficient Aadhaar services.
Extended Deadline for PAN-Aadhaar Linking
- The government has extended the PAN-Aadhaar linking deadline to December 31, 2025.
- PAN cards not linked to Aadhaar by this date will become inactive from January 1, 2026.
- This may affect income tax filings, Demat accounts, and mutual fund transactions, making timely linking essential.
Tighter Aadhaar Verification for Greater Trust
- UIDAI has introduced stricter rules to prevent misuse and duplication of Aadhaar.
- Only valid, active, and unique Aadhaar numbers will be accepted for KYC verification.
- If an Aadhaar is found to be inactive or duplicated, related banking or investment activities will be temporarily suspended until the issue is resolved.
Aadhaar will play an increasingly important role in India's digital framework beginning in November 2025. UIDAI aspires to create a more trustworthy, secure, and citizen-friendly digital identification system by making upgrades easier, providing free child biometrics, and tightening security.
