Reliance Plans Massive AI Data Center in Gujarat, Surpassing Global Giants
Reliance Industries plans to build the world’s largest data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, surpassing Microsoft’s current record. The AI-focused facility, powered by renewable energy, will cost up to $30 billion.

India is set to host the world's largest data center, surpassing Microsoft's current largest facility. According to Bloomberg, Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries intends to build this enormous facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat. With a projected capacity of three gigawatts, the building will dwarf existing data centers, such as Microsoft's 600-megawatt Virginia location.
The data center will serve as the foundation for AI applications, with Ambani looking for aggressive pricing on AI services. To assist with this project, Reliance began acquiring Nvidia's sophisticated AI chips, including Blackwell AI processors. This cooperation builds on their September 2024 partnership to create AI supercomputers and large language models (LLMs). The Indian government has pledged about ₹10,000 crore to support AI breakthroughs, including firms, projects, and LLM development.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang underlined India's need to create its own AI rather than depending on imported intelligence. Ambani expressed similar comments, noting India's strong internet infrastructure as a key aspect in AI progress.
Given the resource-intensive nature of AI, building such a huge data center poses major hurdles. The project's anticipated cost is between $20 billion and $30 billion. However, Reliance intends to power the facility primarily with renewable energy, utilizing a nearby green energy complex that includes solar, wind, and hydrogen power.
This effort complements worldwide AI infrastructure expenditures. OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle recently announced a $500 billion investment in the Stargate Project, a network of artificial intelligence data centers across the United States. As AI advances, India's ambitious data center project represents a significant step forward in the country's technical and economic development.
