Locked Reels on Instagram? Users May Soon Need Secret Codes to Access Exclusive Creator Content
Instagram is testing locked reels that require secret codes, allowing creators to share exclusive content with loyal followers.

Instagram is privately testing an upcoming function called Locked Reels, in which users must input a secret code to see the video. These reels include a tip to assist you guess the code, making it an entertaining way for producers to connect with their audience.
For example, a creator may lock a reel with clues like "the city I grew up in" or "my favourite food"—information that only dedicated fans may be aware of. This enables artists, influencers, and even celebrities to share exclusive material with their most loyal fan bases.
The Instagram Design account just tested this. They shared a reel with the hint "1st # in the caption". Based on the first hashtag, the code was identified as "threads". Once enabled, the reel just displayed a teaser that said "coming soon," implying the creation of a Threads account.
While Instagram has yet to comment on the feature, it may be an effective tool for brand promotions, product teases, and special giveaways. Consider a clothing brand teasing "our launch month" to get an early look at a new collection.
Even for frequent users, it might be a great method to send personal reels to close friends utilising inside jokes or shared memories as clues, such as "our beach trip song".
However, some users may find this extra step unpleasant, especially in an app already packed with features. It's similar to Instagram's "Reveal" story feature, which launched last year and required followers to DM you to unlock content.
Whether or if this becomes a permanent feature, the goal is clear: to make connection more personal and amusing.
