Google Pushes Gemini AI as the Future of Virtual Assistants, Phasing Out Assistant This Year
Google is replacing Assistant with Gemini AI as the default on Android devices, expanding to iOS and smart home products soon.

Google has been quickly developing its AI skills, and its Gemini AI is expected to become the default assistant for billions of Android users. Many of the latest smartphones already have Gemini pre-installed, and existing Android devices will soon be upgraded.
With this shift, Google hopes to extend Gemini's reach beyond Android, even targeting users on iOS. The move signals the end of Google Assistant, which, although useful, had limitations. Gemini, being AI-powered, is more dynamic and conversational, and it provides a free live engagement service.
The shift was unavoidable ever since Google debuted Gemini on its Pixel handsets. While aide served its job, there was a clear need for a more intelligent, capable AI aide. Additionally, Google intends to add Gemini to Nest smart home devices, making them more relevant in an AI-driven future.
Google has confirmed that the transition will take place in the coming months, with Assistant being totally dropped out later this year. Meanwhile, Apple is still attempting to improve Siri with AI, with reports indicating that a fully matured version will not be available until iOS 20 in 2027.
With these improvements, Google's Gemini AI is clearly leading the AI assistant race, setting new benchmarks for smart device engagements.
