WhatsApp is reportedly developing an update that will enable users to share motion photos within chats and channels. This functionality, discovered in the most recent WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.25.8.12), lets users to share short video clips with audio, like Live Photos on iOS. At present, motion photos taken with Android devices are uploaded as still pictures on WhatsApp, but a future update will change that.

Based on WABetaInfo, WhatsApp's new motion photo picker button is currently in development. A new option will appear next to the HD button in the media picker, allowing users to select and send motion photos. Although this function is being tested, it is not yet available to beta users.

Motion photos, which often appear on Pixel and Samsung devices, mix a brief video and audio with a still image. Although only a few Android smartphones function motion photo capturing, WhatsApp will ensure that receivers can view them on any Android device, including those with no motion photo support.  iOS users, on the opposite hand, will recognize these as Live Photos.

There is no confirmed release date for this option yet, but once tested, it will be made available to beta users before being released as a stable version.
