Digital arrest scams have become an major problem in India. In these scams, fraudulent actors pose as police officers or government officials. They contact victims using platforms such as WhatsApp, frequently using video calls, and instill panic by stating the individual is under investigation or "digital arrest." Victims are under pressure to transfer money in order to escape legal issues. These scams rely largely on fear and confusion to deceive victims.
I4C (Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre), the cyber wing of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has urged more robust action. One important approach is to disable the device IDs used by scammers. This is significant since fraudsters frequently create new accounts after being banned. Authorities anticipate that by restricting the gadget itself, they can prevent repeated usage and minimize the number of fraudulent accounts.
The government is also looking into new safety features for platforms like WhatsApp to boost user protection. These characteristics may aid in detecting suspicious activity and alerting consumers before they fall victim to frauds.
Another big concept is to keep data from deactivated accounts for up to 180 days under IT Rules 2021. This will allow investigators to obtain critical information during cybercrime investigations. In addition, officials intend to identify and block malicious APK files and fake apps associated with these scams. Many scammers use fake apps to steal user information or get access to devices.
These efforts demonstrate that the government emphasizes greater cybersecurity and fraud prevention.
