AI Startup Perplexity Aims to Revolutionize Browsing with Comet, a Smart Assistant-Like Mobile Browser

AI search startup Perplexity, backed by Nvidia, may make a major move into the mobile browser market. According to Reuters, the business is in talks with key smartphone manufacturers about pre-installing its new AI-powered browser, "Comet", on upcoming smartphones. The goal is to either make Comet the default browser or make it available as a built-in app, similar to how Chrome and Safari presently dominate Android and iOS phones.

Currently, Chrome and Safari control approximately 94% of the global mobile browser market. But Perplexity aims to shake up the game—not by replicating them, but by creating something entirely new.

Comet is more than just a typical browser. It functioned more like a smart assistant. Comet, built on the same engine as Chrome (Chromium), allows users to search, summarize websites, schedule meetings, and even respond to to emails all from within the browser. If you give it permission, it can access your schedule and inbox to make smart suggestions or conduct useful activities automatically.Perplexity refers to this concept as "agentic browsing," in which the browser becomes an intelligent assistant rather than just a tool for searching the web.

The company is also focusing on user privacy, as much of the AI processing happens on the device rather than in the cloud. Comet is now being tested by a small number of people who pay $200/month for Perplexity's premium plan, but it will soon be available in both free and paid versions.

Perplexity is also growing quickly. It recently collaborated with Lenovo's Motorola to pre-install its AI assistant, and it is in discussions with Samsung about future integration. In India, it collaborated with Airtel to provide free one-year Pro memberships, boosting it beyond ChatGPT as the most downloaded iOS app in the country.

With $100 million in new funding and a valuation of $18 billion, Perplexity is making huge breakthroughs in AI—and Comet could be the key to revolutionizing the mobile browser experience.
