Toshiba has introduced a new series of high-capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) intended primarily for data centers, cloud storage providers, and large enterprise systems. The new Toshiba M12 Series drives were released around World Backup Day, emphasizing the growing need of data backup and dependable storage solutions.

As digital data grows due to cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and video streaming, businesses require more powerful storage systems. Toshiba claims the new M12 hard drives are designed to manage huge volumes of data generated by current data centers and hyperscale cloud services.

The Toshiba M12 Series hard drives use Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology (it helps hard drives store more data by placing data tracks closer together on the disk), which allows them to store more data on each disk. With this technology, the new drives can provide storage capacities between 30TB and 34TB, making them suitable for large-scale storage environments. These 3.5-inch hard drives are designed to support businesses that manage huge volumes of digital data, such as cloud platforms, enterprise storage systems, and online services.

Toshiba has implemented various new technologies to enhance the performance and endurance of these drives. One noteworthy enhancement is the addition of an extra magnetic platter, bringing the total number of platters inside the drive to 11. The company has also replaced the typical aluminum disk base with a more durable glass material. The modification increases durability and allows for a thinner, more efficient drive design. Another important feature is that the drives are filled with helium, which reduces friction and heat within the drive. This architecture increases energy efficiency and long-term reliability, which is critical for data centers that run storage systems continually.

The M12 Series uses Toshiba’s Flux Control Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology. This advanced method helps increase data density, allowing more information to be stored on each disk. Although SMR technology can sometimes affect performance, Toshiba uses a host-managed SMR system. This allows the host system to control how data is written and managed, improving efficiency in server and data center environments.

The new drives have a maximum data transmission speed of 282MB/s, which is approximately 8% quicker than the old M11 series. They are also designed to operate 24/7 and handle up to 550TB of data transfer per year. Toshiba intends to introduce further drives later that will use Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology and have a storage capacity of up to 28TB.
