Palo Alto Networks Expands AI Cybersecurity Service for Continuous Vulnerability Detection and Attack Testing

Palo Alto Networks has launched Unit 42 Continuous Frontier AI Defense, a new cybersecurity service designed to help businesses find security weaknesses continuously using AI-powered security testing.

The new service combines AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic through Palo Alto Networks' own multi-model system. The company says this setup allows different security tasks to be handled by the AI model considered most suitable for each task.

Unlike traditional security checks that are performed from time to time, the new service is designed for continuous vulnerability testing. It can check web applications, APIs, cloud systems, source code repositories and network assets for possible security problems.

The service also tests possible attack paths and provides remediation guidance, helping security teams understand which vulnerabilities need attention first. Palo Alto Networks describes it as an agentic offensive security service because AI is used to automate parts of security testing and exposure analysis.

Palo Alto Networks said the service was developed after six months of internal testing and more than 100 user engagements, with the company investing $17 million in research and development.

During one internal test, the system reportedly identified a year's worth of security exposures in just three weeks. Customer assessments also uncovered exposures in every case, with 37% rated high or critical severity.

The company said more than two-thirds of exposures found in third-party applications did not have a known CVE number. Palo Alto Networks noted that these findings are based on its own testing and customer assessments and have not been independently verified across all organisations.

The new service builds on Unit 42's earlier Frontier AI Defense offering, launched in April. While the earlier service focused on point-in-time security checks, the new subscription service provides ongoing testing as applications and systems change.

Unit 42 Continuous Frontier AI Defense is now available worldwide through annual subscriptions. Pricing depends on the AI models selected, while Palo Alto Networks has not disclosed specific subscription costs.

The launch adds another AI cybersecurity service to Palo Alto Networks' portfolio, with a focus on continuous vulnerability detection, attack-path testing and faster remediation guidance for security teams.
