Cybersecurity Report Warns India Faces Growing Cyberattacks as Malware, Phishing and Critical Infrastructure Threats Continue to Rise

A new cybersecurity report highlights the growing risks facing Indian businesses, citizens, government systems and critical infrastructure as digital adoption continues to expand.

India is facing a growing wave of cyber threats as the country rapidly expands its digital services. A new cybersecurity report on India has recorded more than 265 million cyberattack attempts and 369 million malware detections during the assessment period.

The report, titled Cyber Shikshit Bharat: Building a Cyber-Resilient India, was released by Indian cybersecurity company Lisianthus Tech. It highlights the increasing cybersecurity risks in India across businesses, citizens, government systems and critical infrastructure.

According to the report, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) recorded more than 29.44 lakh cybersecurity incidents in 2025. The figures highlight how cyber threats are becoming an increasingly important concern as individuals and organisations move more of their activities online. The report also highlighted cyber activity during Operation Sindoor, when nearly 1.5 million cyberattack attempts were recorded. These included phishing campaigns, malware attacks, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and website defacement.

Around 150 of these incidents reportedly resulted in successful system compromises, highlighting the need for stronger cyber defence and cybersecurity protection across critical systems.

India's critical infrastructure is also facing increasing risks. The power sector alone recorded nearly 200,000 attempted cyber intrusions, while telecom networks, government systems and other important sectors continued to face cyber threats.

Khushal Kaushik, Ethical Hacker and Founder & CEO of Lisianthus Tech, said India's digital growth has become a global success story, but the country's cyber threat landscape is evolving rapidly. He also stated that cybersecurity is no longer simply an IT concern and has become an important national security issue. According to him, cyberattacks, malware campaigns and state-linked cyber operations are becoming increasingly organised and sophisticated.

He also pointed to the large number of cyberattack attempts and malware detections as an indication of the scale of India's cybersecurity challenge.

Through the they aims to improve cyber awareness among citizens, students, government officials, businesses and critical infrastructure operators. The initiative focuses on helping people develop the knowledge and skills needed to identify and respond to modern cyber threats in India.

For everyday internet users, the rising number of cyberattacks is a reminder to remain cautious online. People should avoid clicking unknown links, downloading files from untrusted sources, or sharing passwords and sensitive information. Businesses and organisations should also keep their systems updated, use appropriate security controls and train employees to identify phishing attempts and other online scams.

As India's digital ecosystem continues to grow, basic cybersecurity awareness will remain an important part of protecting personal information, money and online accounts.
