Google’s AI Chatbot Gemini Records Massive Growth, Reaches 450 Million Active Users
Google’s Gemini app now has over 450 million users, boosted by student offers and AI features, as it rivals ChatGPT and Perplexity in India’s growing AI market.

The Gemini app from Google is making great progress in the field of AI chatbots. Shekar Khosla, Google's VP of Marketing in India, said that the app now has more than 450 million monthly active users (MAUs). Not only that, but daily use has gone up by more than 50% compared to the previous quarter.
One major reason for this rise could be Google's latest offer to Indian students aged 18 and above, which gives them free access to the Gemini AI Pro subscription, which normally costs ₹19,500 a year. This deal is valid until September 15, 2025, and it includes access to powerful AI tools including Gemini 2.5 Pro, Deep Research, Veo 3 (an AI video creator), Flow, and Notebook LM.
Google is also helping the tech ecosystem in India. The company said during the I/O Connect India 2025 event that it was working with Indian companies to build AI models as part of the IndiaAI mission.
Gemini is up towards severe competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has over 600 million MAUs right now. While Gemini is expanding quickly, another app that is become more popular is Perplexity AI, which just beat ChatGPT to become the top app on Apple's App Store in India. Perplexity also gave Bharti Airtel consumers a free Pro subscription, which made it much more popular.
Google's Gemini is swiftly catching up in the AI race, and India seems to be a big part of that development story.
