Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity Becomes Major Focus Under New CISA Initiative
CISA unveiled new cybersecurity crisis planning guidance to protect critical infrastructure, focusing on cyber resilience, operational recovery, industrial control systems, and defense networks against growing cyberattacks and geopolitical cyber threats targeting national security sectors.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has unveiled CI Fortify, a new cybersecurity initiative designed to help critical infrastructure businesses prepare for large-scale cyberattacks and geopolitical emergencies. The new guidance is aimed at safeguarding critical services such as water utilities, transportation systems, energy networks, industrial systems, and communication infrastructure from cyber attacks that could interrupt normal operations. The move comes as governments around the world boost their focus on cybersecurity protection in response to the rise of cyberattacks on national infrastructure and digital systems.
According to CISA, the new CI Fortify initiative is intended to assist critical infrastructure organizations in operating even amid catastrophic cyber attacks. The effort primarily focuses on two fundamental objectives, isolation and recovery.
During an emergency, the "isolation" approach is used to disconnect critical operating systems from external or third-party networks. This reduces the chance of hackers spreading attacks across connected systems. Instead of entirely shutting down operations, companies are encouraged to keep key services running while limiting their risk.
The other goal is "recovery." CISA recommends that enterprises maintain comprehensive system documentation, backup key data on a regular basis, and plan for emergency recovery in preparation. The advise also suggests practicing manual operations and system replacement procedures so that businesses can continue to function even if digital systems fail during a cyberattack.
CISA is mainly focusing on sectors connected to national security and critical infrastructure, including water supply, transportation, energy systems, satellite communications, industrial control systems, and defense networks. Cybersecurity experts warn that modern geopolitical conflicts increasingly involve cyberattacks targeting essential public services and critical national infrastructure systems. Cybersecurity experts believe cyber threats targeting operational technology (OT) systems and industrial infrastructure will continue increasing as digital systems become more interconnected.
CISA's new CI Fortify program highlights the increasing importance of cybersecurity preparedness and infrastructure resilience in today's digital world. As cyber threats increase internationally, businesses responsible for essential services are encouraged to tighten recovery planning, improve cyber security systems, and plan for large-scale disruptions ahead of time.
